Heart-Healthy Labor Day Grilling Ideas

1/10/20 Ricky Baizas

Labor Day. Food. Family. Fun.

Isn’t this is a great time to indulge in some of your favorite grilled delicacies?

Grilled steak. Grilled ribs. Grilled chicken.

But wait.

What if you have friends and family who:

  • are vegan/vegetarian
  • have wheat allergies
  • are on a diet
  • struggling with weight loss
  • suffer with health conditions
  • and the list goes on…

Suddenly, the backyard barbecue gets complicated.

Don’t worry! There is hope.

Did you know that you can indulge in some of your grilled favorites in a healthy way without losing flavor?

That’s right. Zero cholesterol. Mouth-watering taste.

Here are some fun, easy, heart-healthy grilling recipes that will blow your mind and you will be happy to share with your family and friends.

Taco Burgers

This recipe takes the traditional burger and makes it healthy with a Mexican-style flavor.

  • Grill veggie burgers, covered, over medium heat for 7-8 minutes on each side.
  • Top each burger with a Daiya cheese slice; cook just until cheese begins to melt. Serve on buns with lettuce, tomato and, if desired, salsa.

Un-Chicken Grills

Tastes like chicken, but even better. Tofu is a soy-based product that can be made to taste like whatever you want. The secret to giving tofu flavor is in marinade.

  • 2 blocks firm tofu, pressed to remove all water

○1/4 cup tamari or soy sauce

○1 tablespoon sesame oil

○2 inches of fresh ginger, peeled & chopped

○2 cloves fresh garlic, peeled & chopped

○1/4 cup maple syrup

  • Place marinade ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth.
  • Slice the tofu into ½ inch thick rectangles.
  • Pour marinade and tofu into a bowl and let it sit for 1 hour.
  • Grill tofu, covered, over medium heat for 7-10 minutes on each side.

Veggie Kebabs

This super simple recipe is definitely a social food. A nice portable meal for walking and talking. Colorful, tasty and fun to eat. Grill ’em, BBQ ’em, marinate ’em. When you give them to the children, beware of the sword fights with the skewer sticks afterwards.

  • 1 green pepper, cut in large chunks
  • 1 pint small button mushroom
  • Vegan shrimp or vegan chicken
  • 1 red onion, cut in large chunks
  • 1 red pepper, cut in large chunks
  • 8 ounces cherry tomatoes
  • Marinade

○  1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

○  1 tablespoon garlic granules

○  ½ cup tamari

○  ¼ cup cold pressed sesame oil

○  ¼ cup maple syrup

  • Skewer sticks

  • In a small bowl, mix marinade ingredients.
  • Add vegan shrimp and veggies to marinade and mix thoroughly.
  • Add pieces to skewer sticks.
  • Grill kebabs over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, rotating occasionally.

Grilled “Steak”

Seitan is a plant-based product that has the texture of beef. You can either make it yourself or get it at your local health food store. Alternatively, if you have a wheat allergy, you can substitute the seitan steaks for portobello mushrooms.

  • Seitan or portobello mushrooms, washed, stems removed.
  • Marinade:

○  1 tablespoon Italian spice (basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme)

○  1 tablespoon garlic granules

○  1 tablespoon onion powder

○  ½ cup tamari or soy sauce

  • Marinate the seitan or portobello mushroom for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Grill covered, over medium heat for 7-8 minutes on each side.

Corn on the Barbie

Grilled corn on the cob has a sweet smokey flavor that will quickly become a favorite at your barbecue.

  • Grill corn for 5 minutes, covered
  • Lightly sprinkle with sea salt
  • Brush with olive oil or Earth Balance vegan butter
  • Grill for 5 more minutes and serve.

So, is it REALLY possible to make ALL of your friends and family happy at the barbecue? Add some of these recipes to your menu this Labor Day and you could come pretty close.
